The London Philharmonia purchased 6 Chancel St in 2014 to use the building as their new headquarters. Furness Green were initially involved in pre-acquisition advice to the Philharmonia during the purchase. Once purchased Furness Green were responsible for developing a building services strategy and design to allow the Philharmonia to move into the building. Drivers during the development of the design include a very tight budget, a desire to improve the efficiency of the existing building and the particular requirements of the Philharmonia. These include an archive space, Library, Orchestra Room, replacement of lighting, modern IT systems, replacement of the old electric heating system with a new gas fired system, and a goods lift.

The scheme included the remodelling of the front of house areas of the theatre and the replacement of much of the plant including new chillers and lifts. A significant aspect of the project was the addition of air conditioning to the 1800’s, 500 seat, listed Royal Auditorium. The overall project cost was £16m and the works were completed during an 18 month closed period.

The services installation was completely renewed except for the retained (nearly new) boilers. Only essential repairs were undertaken to the exterior of the building. The main hall was converted to a system of displacement ventilation served by ductwork from the floor below (to avoid any interference with the ornate interior décor) and utilised the existing radiator casings as air supply terminals. A significant element of the project was the creation of new changing rooms at the basement level.
